Dear critical, politically and socially engaged football fans around the world,
My name is Hein Meurs and I come from the Netherlands. I have been campaigning for some time via social media and publications to make sure the Qatar 2022 World Cup is not held there. I have also made many pleas for this in the Dutch newspapers and on the news radio and I have especially called on (sports) journalists to make a plea for this. However, I think that the greatest chance of achieving this lies in having a world-famous (ex-) football player or football coach speak out against this World Cup. And if major sponsors stay away from Qatar. Given the current political and social climate, with a focus on racism and human rights, the chances of success here seem realistic, if it is constantly pointed out and published. This may no longer be possible for the Qatar World Cup, but we can prevent a repeat of this great injustice and scandal in the future.
But you, football fans/supporters, can also make your voice heard and, through your club, insist on the KNVB – or your own association – that a motion to boycott the Qatar World Cup is put to a vote. In Norway, in particular, advanced initiatives have already been taken in this area.
Some time ago we set up the Cancel World Cup Qatar 2022 committee to be able to campaign even broader and more targeted. This committee consists of sports historian Jurryt van de Vooren, ex-soccer blogger Teun Meurs and the present writer, football fanatic and descriptor Hein Meurs.

You can also read our plans and strategy on our website, as well as sign our petition. Even better is if you also recommend and distribute it within your network. This petition, together with those of Freek de Jonge, Tim Blank, Matthijs de Jong and the football magazine <em>Panenka </em>, has now been presented to the KNVB. All in all, it garnered 20,000 signatures. But still signing certainly contributes to more pressure and attention for the situation.
We as football fans are emphatically not out to withhold a World Cup from football players and football supporters. We strive for the World Cup to be moved after all and nobody has to miss anything. If the Netherlands and the KNVB boycott the Qatar World Cup, this will be followed internationally and relocation can still be realised. We also make an urgent appeal to Dutch companies that trade in and with Qatar, and to major sponsors such as Coca Cola, Budweiser, Hyundai and Visa. Make a statement, stop funding and facilitating an event which, according to The Guardian, has already claimed more than 6,500 deaths, even as Qatar continues to dispute this number, and refuses to disclose about the causes of death and numbers.
Surely no company wants to be jointly responsible for that?! All over the world there are blogs, Facebook pages and Twitter accounts calling for action against this World Cup and petitions to be signed. All well-intentioned initiatives, but each less efficient and effective. Our call is therefore to join forces internationally to form a large, massive movement that can actually exert influence. With a much larger reach, so also much more chance of a big, well-known football name that will speak out. And that sponsors will change their mind and withdraw.
In the meantime we are also working on a book, Nooit Meer Qatar (No More Qatar), which can already be ordered. The plan is to present and release this on May 30. We also have a pleasant, but for for the Qatar World Cup unpleasant, surprise in store on this day. More information about this will follow. Obviously we realize that moving this World Cup after all is an almost unfeasible thing. But we look further. So that this can never happen again. Hence also ‘Never More Qatar’. Through this message and this call we hope for a much wider reach and worldwide cooperation, but also for useful tips, addresses, contacts and proposals to achieve this. Thank you in advance!

Mijn naam is Hein Meurs en ik kom uit Nederland. Ik voer al een tijdje campagne via sociale media en publicaties om ervoor te zorgen dat het WK Qatar 2022 daar niet wordt gehouden. Ik heb hiervoor ook menig pleidooi gehouden in de Nederlandse kranten en op de nieuwsradio en heb vooral (sport)journalisten opgeroepen om hier een pleidooi voor te houden. Toch denk ik dat de grootste kans om dit te bereiken erin is gelegen dat een wereldberoemde (ex-)voetballer of voetbalcoach die zich uitspreekt tegen dit WK. En als grote sponsors uit Qatar wegblijven. Gezien het huidige politieke en sociale klimaat, met een focus op racisme en mensenrechten, lijkt de kans op succes hierin realistisch, mits er constant op gewezen en over gepubliceerd wordt. Wellicht lukt dit niet meer voor het WK Qatar, maar kunnen we in de toekomst een herhaling van dit grote onrecht en schandaal voorkomen.
Maar ook jullie, voetballiefhebbers/supporters, kunnen je stem laten horen en er, via je club, bij de KNVB – of jouw eigen bond – op aandringen dat een motie om het WK Qatar te boycotten in stemming wordt gebracht. Met name in Noorwegen zijn op dat gebied al vergevorderde initiatieven genomen.
Alweer enige tijd geleden hebben we het comité Cancel WK Qatar 2022 opgericht om nóg breder en doelgerichter campagne te kunnen voeren. Dit comité bestaat uit sporthistoricus Jurryt van de Vooren, ex-voetbalblogger Teun Meurs en schrijver dezes, voetbalfanaat en -beschrijver Hein Meurs.

Je kunt ook op onze website onze plannen en strategie lezen en bovendien nog onze petitie tekenen. Nóg mooier is als je hem ook binnen je netwerk gaat aanbevelen en verspreiden. Deze petitie is inmiddels, tezamen met die van Freek de Jonge, Tim Blank, Matthijs de Jong en het voetbalblad Panenka aan de KNVB worden aangeboden. Het leverde alles bijeen 20.000 handtekeningen op. Maar alsnog tekenen draagt zeker bij tot meer druk op en aandacht voor de situatie.
Wij als voetballiefhebbers zijn er nadrukkelijk niet op uit om voetballers en voetbalsupporters een WK te onthouden. Wij streven ernaar dat het WK alsnog wordt verplaatst en niemand iets hoeft te missen. Als Nederland en de KNVB het WK Qatar boycotten, zal dat internationaal navolging krijgen en kan verplaatsing alsnog gerealiseerd worden. Tevens doen wij een klemmend beroep op Nederlandse bedrijven die handel drijven in en met Qatar, en op de grote sponsors als Coca Cola, Budweiser, Hyundai en Visa. Maak een statement, stop met het financieren en faciliteren van een evenement dat volgens The Guardian nu al meer dan 6500 dodelijke slachtoffers zou hebben geëist, ook al blijft Qatar dit aantal betwisten, en weigert het openheid van zaken te geven over de doodsoorzaken en aantallen.
Daar wil toch geen bedrijf medeverantwoordelijk voor zijn?! Over de hele wereld zijn er blogs, Facebookpagina’s en Twitteraccounts waarin wordt opgeroepen tot actie tegen dit WK en zijn er petities die kunnen worden ondertekend. Allemaal goedbedoelde initiatieven, maar ieder voor zich minder efficiënt en effectief. Onze oproep is dan ook om internationaal de krachten te bundelen en daarmee een grote, massale beweging te vormen die daadwerkelijk invloed kan uitoefenen. Met een veel groter bereik, dus ook veel meer kans op een grote, bekende voetbalnaam, die zich uit gaat spreken. En dat sponsors zich gaan bedenken en zich terug gaan trekken.
Ondertussen zijn we ook bezig met een boek, Nooit Meer Qatar, dat nu reeds te bestellen is. Het plan is om dit op 30 mei a.s. te presenteren en uit te brengen. Ook hebben wij op deze dag nog een aangename, maar voor het WK Qatar onaangename, verrassing in petto. Nader bericht hierover volgt.
Uiteraard beseffen wij dat een alsnog verplaatsing van dit WK een schier onhaalbare zaak is. Maar wij kijken verder. Opdat dit nooit meer kan en mag gebeuren. Vandaar ook ‘Nooit Meer Qatar’.
